Zero stopped. Time flashed before his eyes. Stride stared at him, his face showing concern.

Stride’s lips moved, but Zero couldn’t hear him. What he heard and saw in his mind was so horrific. The unspeakable acts of cruelty left him feeling strangled. Dog. Dog lover. He’d just seen glimpses of Stride and a dog he’d loved in childhood.

He watched Stride running, sobbing, the small dog in his arms, cowering. At the same second the realisation hit him, the voice in his head started snarling and the Vampire Queen’s teeth bared themselves in his mind’s eye.

“Kill him! Enslave him! Do it now!”

Stride stood in front of him, but Zero couldn’t reach past the gruesome scene in his head.

Tears filled Zero’s eyes, so that Stride’s image swam in front of him. One tear streaked down his face. Zero swatted at it.

“Zero, what is it?” Stride’s voice made contact finally, but Zero couldn’t respond as he pictured Stride’s beloved puppy being torn from his arms and killed. He’d loved that dog. Loved him with his whole heart…just as he’d loved his werewolf lover. Loved. Zero almost could have smiled except for the excruciating sounds in his head of the puppy’s agonised death screams.

The Vampire Queen screamed, furious that her guard had slipped. It had only been a few seconds but long enough for Zero to know the truth.

She killed everything her son loved. And she wanted to kill Stride…and Zero. Did this mean, in some small corner of his soul, that Stride loved him? Or could love him? Hope crowded his heart like a frozen vagrant around a warm fire.

“What’s going on?” Stride asked him. “Zero…are you okay?”

Zero worked hard to remove the Vampire Queen from his mind, to stop giving her access. He found the strength somehow…from somewhere deep within. He felt the mingling of Stride’s blood with his. It gave him pause. Even his strong bond with Daken hadn’t been like this. Not at all. He swallowed over the lump in his throat.

Don’t think about him. Don’t…

He focussed on his internal struggle. It was as though he fought good and evil within his own soul. Think positive… Stride’s blood gave him strength and a new clarity.

“Oh God, Zero, no.”

Zero felt Stride’s presence in his mind. Stride’s face came into view. He looked stricken by what he saw there. Zero heard the faint panting of the small, helpless puppy. It had stopped screaming in Zero’s brain as Stride tried to infiltrate it.

No wonder Stride had stopped loving. It was not just for his protection but also for those he loved.

“What you have lived with…” Zero’s voice trailed away. What a lonely, painful, burdensome existence. How could a mother, any mother, want to enslave her son?

“Each man kills the thing he loves, yet each man does not die,” Stride said, his voice cracking. It was a rare show of emotion. He was letting Zero know that he’d captured the images in Zero’s mind. He’d seen it all. Zero had probably come closer to Stride than any other being apart from his were-lover.
